5 Signs Your Child Is Ready for Pre-K

June 5, 2026

The jump from preschool to Pre-K can feel like a big deal — because it is. Pre-K is where children start building the specific skills they’ll carry into kindergarten. But how do you know if your child is ready? Here are five signs to look for.

1. They Can Follow Two-Step Directions

“Put your shoes in the basket and come sit at the table.” If your child can hold two instructions in their head and act on them in order, they’re showing the executive function skills that Pre-K will build on.

2. They’re Interested in Letters and Numbers

They don’t need to read or count to 100. But if they’re pointing at letters on signs, asking “what does that say?”, or counting objects on their own — they’re showing the curiosity that Pre-K channels into real literacy and math skills.

3. They Can Sit With an Activity for 5–10 Minutes

Pre-K involves more focused work than preschool. Puzzles, drawing, listening to a story, working on a project — if your child can sustain attention on a chosen activity for several minutes without adult prompting, they’re ready for the structure Pre-K brings.

4. They Can Express Needs With Words

“I need help” or “I don’t like that” instead of tears or tantrums. Pre-K classrooms run on verbal communication, and children who can name their needs and feelings will thrive in that environment.

5. They’re Excited About “Big Kid” Things

Wanting to write their name, asking about kindergarten, pretending to “go to school” — these are all signs that your child is emotionally ready for the next step. That excitement is fuel, and a good Pre-K program knows how to channel it.

At Alphabet Academy, our Pre-K program is designed to meet children right where they are and build the confidence, skills, and independence they need for kindergarten. Learn more about our Pre-K program or schedule a tour to see it in action.
